Despite the growing profile of Assistive Technology (AT) within health and social care sectors, the educational and CPD learning opportunities around AT remain limited and unclear as identified by the Foundation for Assistive Technology[1] (FAST). Following its workforce development study in June 2007 a key area identified was the need to develop an educational/training pathway that could meet the needs of a growing future workforce.

In July 2008 the College of Occupational Therapists approached Coventry University’s Department of Occupational Therapy to identify what Continuing Professional Development (CPD) opportunities could be designed to meet the needs of support workers and practitioners to develop a greater understanding and awareness of the potential of AT and its benefits on the management of long-term conditions.

This presentation outlines the rationale underpinning the development of the online Assistive Technology Learning Tool (ATLT) designed by Coventry University in association with the Health Design and Technology Institute and the College of Occupational Therapists.

The ATLT focuses on electronic AT including telecare, telehealth, activity monitoring and environmental control. It provides a flexible, self-directed learning environment in six units. Case-based scenarios encourage learners to adopt a person-centred approach using critical reflection to evidence their learning.

It is envisaged that the Tool could be used with a wide range of learners both qualified and unqualified in health, social care, educational and third sector settings.

This presentation includes a guided tour of how the ATLT works and how it can be accessed. The ATLT will be available later in 2009 via Coventry University’s ‘Online store’ and is modestly priced at £100.
